Only unlocked cell phones can use eSIM
iPhone sold in China, Hong Kong, and Macau are not eSIM enabled

Please confirm if your phone is “carrier unlocked”.
APPLE
Go to Settings> General> About.
Scroll down to view the “Carrier lock” section.
It should say “NO SIM restrictions”, which means that the device is unlocked.
Scroll down to view the “DIGITAL SIM” section. It should contain a “DIGITAL SIM” IMEI, which means that the device is eSIM compatible.
ANDROID
Go to Settings
In Settings you see a search bar, type in “IMEI”, and the option “IMEI information” (or similar) should show up (otherwise, you will need to go to About phone> Status).
Tap “IMEI information”
If the “IMEI (eSIM)” is available it should mean that your device supports eSIM.
Call your carrier customer service and quote your IMEI number, they will be able to tell you if your phone is “locked” or “unlocked”.
